We’re on our own now, with no one to interpret the language or explain the customs. (Most signs and restaurant menus are in unapologetic German — which is fine, it’s their country. But it does make it hard to get around. Doug’s been studying German for a year, which helps.) It’s also May 1, a labor holiday, so a lot of things are closed.

We go to the Cathedral, which is glorious. You can’t use any word but “soaring” to describe the tall, vaulted ceilings, and some of the stained glass is spectacular. Other parts are surprisingly recent; construction started in 1248, but only finished in 1880.
