A while back I got email from the programming committee at Worldcon, telling me that they’d put me on a panel. It was called Mythogenesis, about myth and legend and folklore, a topic I think is fascinating. I’d met or read most of the other people who’d be on — Heather Rose Jones, Roni Gosch, Tad Williams, and Foz Meadows — and they seemed smart and knowledgable and interesting.
Then, as I think everyone knows by now, it was pointed out to the programming committee that their schedule had some pretty glaring omissions — people of color and LGBT people and some of the younger Hugo nominees, among others. The program’s being taken apart and put together again, and it’s impossible to know if I’ll still have this spot at the end.
And you know what? I’m okay with this. I’ve been on panels before, and if there’s someone who’s never been on a panel, who’s been left off because of unconscious (or conscious) bias or just not knowing how to ask, then hell yeah, they should have their turn. And leaving off the Hugo nominees? This should be a magical weekend for them, filled with excitement and congratulations, something to remember for the rest of their lives.
Well, whatever happens, I’ll keep you guys posted.
