Present for a Relative
A cousin of mine has a son who likes science fiction and fantasy. He’s the only relative I have who does, so for his bar mitzvah I went through the shelves at Dark Carnival alphabetically and picked out some books I thought he might enjoy. This took way longer than I thought it would and I had to hurry toward the end, which was unfortunately when I noticed my choices were heavy on fantasy and too light on science fiction, so I grabbed the last book on the list mostly for its sf cred. I also realized that I had no authors of color, but if I do this again next year I can fix that.
The Last Unicorn, Peter Beagle
Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
The Owl Service, Alan Garner
The Princess Bride, William Goldman
Dark Cities Underground, Me
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci I, Diana Wynne Jones (To be honest I haven’t read this one, but I’ve heard good things about it.)
Beggars in Spain, Nancy Kress
The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula Le Guin
A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula Le Guin
The Tombs of Atuan, Ursula Le Guin
The Farthest Shore, Ursula Le Guin (Hey, I like Le Guin)
Anubis Gates, Tim Powers
Spin, Robert Charles Wilson
