Update on Dark Carnival
A while back Dark Carnival Bookstore took the first step toward going out of business by having a 20% off sale. The plan was to follow that with 30% off and so on, until everything was sold.
But when I visited Dark Carnival on Sunday, Jack, the owner, told me he was reconsidering. The sale had gone well, but more than that, people were telling him how much they loved the store, how much they’d miss it when it was gone. I asked him if he thought he’d be staying after all, but he said he didn’t know, that everything was up in the air. He thinks he’ll be there through Christmas and then see what happens.
So if you like the store, stop by and give it some love. The credit card machine isn’t working, though, so you have to take your credit card to the comics store down the street to pay for your purchases. Somehow this seems to sum up a lot about Dark Carnival itself — it’s quirky rather polished or high-tech, and things don’t always go the way they want them to, but they work it out in the end.
