Some Stuff

1. Best quote of the week, from an interview in Totalitopia Plus, a John Crowley collection from PM Press:

Terry Bisson: The fairies in Little, Big forget the past but remember the future.  Were you remembering that Ted Chiang was someday going to be developing that idea for Hollywood?

John Crowley: It’s inappropriate for the interviewer to ask wittier questions than the subject can come up with answers for.

(Will have to remember that when I’m stuck for an answer in an interview.)

Also, Crowley is coming out with a new fantasy novel!!!  He says in the interview that the book “...was deliberately conceived to sell lots of copies” and that “I’m hoping it will win back the fantasy-fan readership I seem to have partly lost with the last couple of books.”  I felt obscurely guilty reading this — I do like his other books, but you’d have to count me in with the “fantasy-fan readership.”

2. Weirdest fact of the week: The word “macabre” might come from “Maccabee.”  Apparently there was a “medieval chorea Machabaeorum [dance of the Maccabees], a representation of the deaths of Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers.”  So says the Random House Dictionary, but they also say “evidence is lacking.”

3. Just had to delete 2,000 words of a novel I’m writing.  Boy, I hate when that happens.
